Bushy-haired, bespectacled, thick-lipped, award-winning Italian director of commercial projects, involved in almost 100 films, as writer, director or both, since 1953. After 1964, when he began directing, his films often featured international stars. His writing career began in his early twenties with Cavalcade of Song (1953), but it would be another decade before he stepped into the director's chair: Let's Talk About Women (1964), The Devil in Love (1966), Jealousy, Italian Style (1970), My Name is Rocco Papaleo (1972), C'Eravamo Tanto Amati/WeAll Loved Each Other So Much (1974), A Special Day (1977), La Terrazza (1980), Le Bal (1983), Macaroni (1985), The Family (1987), Splendour (1989), The Voyage of Captain Fracasse (1990), Mario, Maria and Mario (1993), The Dinner (1998), People of Rome (2003) and the Fellini documentary How Strange to be Named Federico (2013), his last.
