Fair-haired, affable-looking, distinguished England stage, TV and occasional film actor, mostly in 'senior' roles as figures of some authority. Born Timothy Robert Hardy, he was latterly best known as Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, in the 'Harry Potter' films. A Shakespearian from his early twenties and a TV player from 1951, he made an isolated film debut in Torpedo Run (1958) while in America. After that he was in early middle age before he began essaying more film roles: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), How I Won the War (1967), Young Winston (1971), Psychomania (1973, and four other films in this year), The Slap (1974), The Shooting Party (1984), Paris by Night (1988), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Mrs Dalloway (1997), The Tichborne Claimant (1998), An Ideal Husband (1999), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002, and three more films in the series), Lassie (2005) and Framed (2008), his last. He also appeared in seven seasons of the popular TV series All Creatures Great and Small.
