Albert Finney

Actor

Born - 9 May 1936, Salford, Lancashire, England
Died - 8 February 2019

Beefy, rubicund, tousle-haired actor of aggressive sex appeal who, after a distinguished start on stage, became associated with 'angry young men' films of the early 1960s, despite appearing in only one. He was quick to display his versatility after that, although his choice of roles was not always sure. The best ones, though - his Tom Jones, his Churchill on TV, his Daddy Warbucks and his lawyer to Erin Brockovich - stand out in the memory, and he was five times nominated for an Oscar. Films, more scattered than one remembers, included The Entertainer (1960), Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), Tom Jones (1963), Charlie Bubbles (1967), Scrooge (1970), Gumshoe (1971), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Duellists (1977), Loophole (1980), Shoot the Moon (1981), Annie (1982), The Dresser (1983), Under the Volcano (1984), Orphans (1987), Miller's Crossing (1990), The Browning Version (1993), Washington Square (1997), Erin Brockovich (2000), Big Fish (2003), Ocean's Twelve (2004), A Good Year (2006), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Bourne Legacy (2012) and Skyfall (2012), his last. Married (first and second of three) to actresses Jane Wenham and Anouk Aimee, he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer some years before his death.
