Although best-known for her rousing success in the long-running TV series The Golden Girls, this acerbic blonde actress had in fact been in movies since 1961, albeit in very low-budget productions at first. After a debut in Door-to-Door Maniac (1961), she made Five Minutes to Love (1963), How to Succeed with Girls (1964), Angel's Flight (1965), Hollywood After Dark (1968), The People Next Door (1970, her first mainstream feature), They Might Be Giants (1971) and Blade (1973, followed by a huge amount of television, which culminated in her starting The Golden Girls (as Blanche) in 1985. It ran until 1992. Later films included Dear God (1996), Out to Sea (1997), Starship Troopers (1997), Nutccrackers (2001), The Fighting Temptations (2003), and Wit's End (2005, her last. She died following a massive stroke.
