John Cairney

Actor

Born - 16 February 1930, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Died - 7 September 2023

Youthful-looking Scottish-born leading actor with a mop of black hair. His slightly apprehensive-looking handsomeness often got him cast as men in tight corners, or inexperienced protagonists out of their depth. Films include Ill-Met by Moonlight (1956), Miracle in Soho (1957), Lucky Jim (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), Shake Hands With the Devil (1959), The Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Victim (1961), Cleopatra (1963), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964) and A Study in Terror (1965), then into TV, where he starred in more than 50 episodes of This Man Craig. He later published several biographies of prominent men in Scottish history. He then moved for 17 years to New Zealand, with his NZ-born actress wife Alannah O'Sullivan, who survives him, along with five children from his first marriage, to actress Sheila Cowan.
