Tall, dark-haired American character actor with thickset features and sharkish smile. Born Richard Romanos of Lebanese ancestry, he was often cast as aggressive Italianiates. Films include The Ghastly Ones (1968), Walk the Walk (1970), Mean Streets (1973), The Dion Brothers (1974), Russian Roulette (1975), Outtakes (1977), Sitting Ducks (1980), Pandemonium (1982), Strangers Kiss (1983), Protocol (1984), Murphy's Law (1986), The Couch Trip (1988), Married to the Mob (1989), Hollywood Heartbreak (1990), Oscar (1991)), Point of No Return (1993), Cops and Robbersons (1994), Urban Relics (1998), Carlo's Wake (1999), Nailed (2001) and The Young Black Stallion (2003), his last. In his latter years, he was, almost inevitably, cast in several episodes of The Sopranos. Survived by his second wife, Oscar-nominated costume designer Anthea Sylbert.
