Strikingly vivacious, oval-faced, red-headed, husky-voiced American actress with prominent cheekbones, in feisty co-starring roles from her teenage years, and nominated for an Oscar for her supporting role in The Defiant Ones (1958). Born Bernice Kamiat of Austrian-Romanian parentage, she began her career as Bernice Kay, before switching to Cara Williams during World War II: Wide Open Town (1941), Girls' Town (1942), Happy Land (1943), In the Meantime, Darling (1944), Laura (1944), The Spider (1945), Boomerang! (1947), The Saxon Charm (1948), Knock on Any Door (1949), Quicksand (1950), The Girl Next Door (1953), two redheads together, opposite Red Skelton in The Great Diamond Robbery (1954), Viva Las Vegas! (1955), Both Ends of the Candle (1957), Never Steal Anything Small (1959), The Man from the Diners' Club (1963, as Sugar Pye!), into TV with her own 30-episode show in the mid 1960s, then Doctors' Wives (1971), The White Buffalo (1977), The One Man Jury (1978) and the TV movie In Security (1982), her last. Actor John Drew Barrymore was the second of her three husbands. Her third husband, Asher Dann, actor-turned-real estate broker, died in 2018. Mother of actor John Blyth Barrymore, she died from a heart attack.
