Diminutive, prolific director who made dozens of episodes of such hit TV series as Maverick, Cheyenne, Mannix, 77 Sunset Strip and Mission:Impossible, as well quite a few films, including the 1966 Batman. Originally a journalist, he came to Hollywood post-war as a script supervisor, beginning with The Yearling (1946). A few years later, he had progressed to assistant director on such pictures as Everybody's Cheering (1949) and If You Feel Like Singing (1950). His movie career, though less successful, contained quite a few popular hits: The Atomic Kid (1954), Hot Rod Girl (1956), Hot Rod Rumble (1957), Lad: A Dog (1962), PT 109 (1963), (1963), For Those Who Think Young (1964), Fathom (1967), The Challengers (1970), Mrs Pollifax - Spy (1971) and Missile X (1977), his last cinema film, although he continued turning out episodes for TV until 1989. The H stood for Herbert.
