Karen Black

Actress

Born - 1 July 1939, Park Ridge, Illinois, USA
Died - 8 August 2013

Bewitchingly slant-eyed, distinctive, abrasively talented actress initially seen in arthouse hits (often opposite Jack Nicholson) but soon plainly willing to have a go at anything, even being a stewardess having to fly a plane over a mountain in Airport 1975. Born Karen Ziegler, she was later seen in a bizarre collection of offbeat movies, including chillers and horror films: Black was a hard worker who ran up almost 200 credits long after her star-billed days were over. After an isolated debut at 20 in The Prime Time (1959), she made You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Hard Contract (1968), Easy Rider (1969), Five Easy Pieces (1970), Drive, He Said (1971), Portnoy's Complaint (1972), The Outfit (1973), The Great Gatsby (1974), Nashville (1975), Burnt Offerings (1976), Capricorn One (1977), Miss Right (1980), Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982), Martin's Day (1984), Invaders from Mars (1985), Dead Girls Don't Dance (1989), The Roller Blade Seven (1992), Crimetime (1995), The Gathering (1996), Mascara (1999), Hard Luck (2001), House of 1,000 Corpses (2003), Nightmare Hostel (2005), Double Duty (2009), Dark Blood (2012) and In the Woods (2014), her last. Four times married, she died from pancreatic cancer. Nominated for an Oscar for Five Easy Pieces.
