Eileen Brennan

Actress

Born - 3 September 1932, Los Angeles, California, USA
Died - 28 July 2013

Brown-haired, blue-eyed, apple-cheeked, solidly-built, abrasive star character actress, at her best in the 1970s, mostly in comedy, but just as effective in dramatic, even tragic roles. Born Verla Eileen Brennan, the daughter of silent screen actress Jean Manahan, she was on TV from the mid 1960s, and made her film debut in Divorce American Style in 1967. But it was her performance as Genevieve in the multi award-winning The Last Picture Show that really kick-started her film career. Thereafter, she was usually star-billed, sometimes as part of an all-star comedy ensemble: Scarecrow (1973), The Sting (1973), Daisy Miller (1974), At Long Last Love (1975), Murder by Death (1976), The Last of the Cowboys (1977), The Cheap Detective (1978) and Oscar-nominated in Private Benjamin (1980). Injuries from a serious car accident in 1982 left her in a wheelchair for a while and disrupted the pattern of her career. Later films tended to be less high-profile: The Funny Farm (1983), Clue (1985), Sticky Fingers (1988), Stella (1990), Texasville (1990), I Don't Buy Kisses Any More (1992), Reckless (1995), Changing Habits (1997), The Last Great Ride (1999), Jeepers Creepers (2001), Dumb Luck (2003), Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005), The Kings of Appletown (2009) and Naked Run (2011), her last. She died from bladder cancer.
