Harve Presnell

Actor/singer

Born - 14 September 1933, Modesto, California, USA
Died - 30 June 2009

Tall, beefy, fair-haired American singer whose crystal clear baritone burst on to film audiences when he repeated his stage role of Leadville Johnny Brown in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). There were acting roles, notably in The Glory Guys (1965) and another musical success as Rotten Luck Willie in Paint Your Wagon, in which Presnell stole the show with his soaring version of They Call the Wind Maria. But the golden age of musicals had gone, and Presnell went back to stage and nightclubs, only re-emerging as a cinema actor in the mid 1990s, now bald, even beefier and moustachioed, notably as William H Macy's father-in-law in the Coen brothers' Fargo (1996). His last cinema role was as a blustering congressman in Evan Almighty (2006). Born George Harvey Presnell, he died from pancreatic cancer.
