Distinguished, bearded, balding cinematographer whose most high-profile work came in the late 1960s and throughout the following decade. After World War Two service with the Signals' Photographic Corps, he quickly rose to become a director of photography in movies: C-Man (1949), Guilty Bystander (1950), Mister Universe (1951), Fail-Safe (1964), Last Summer (1968), Goodbye Columbus (1969), Doc (1971), Young Frankenstein (1974), Two-Minute Warning (1976), The World's Greatest Lover (1977), The Bell Jar (1979), My Favorite Year (1982), The House of God (1984), Head Office (1985), Malone (1987) and the TV movie Secret Sins of the Father (1994), his last. His four children include Alec, also a director of photography in films.
