Toothy, tawny-haired English actress in provocative roles, an 'it' girl of the 1960s and 1970s who became an acting and singing icon in France, Her raunchy duet with longtime lover Serge Gainsbourg, Je t'Aime...Moi Non Plus became a number 1 hit in France and the UK, although many countries banned it from their airwaves. Her many films included The Knack...and How to Get It (1964), The Idol (1966), Blow-Up (1968), La Piscine/The Swimming Pool (1969), Slogan (1969), May Morning (1970), Romance of a Horsethief (1971), Don Juan, or If Don Juan Were a Woman (1973), Dark Places (1974), Catherine & Co (1975), L'Animal (1977), Death on the Nile (1978), Melancholy Baby (1979), The Prodigal Daughter (1981), Evil Under the Sun (1982), The Bodyguard (1984), La Femme de Ma Vie (1986), Kung Fu Master! (1988), Daddy Nostalgie (1990), One Hundred and One Nights (1995), Same Old Song (1997), Merci Docteur Rey (2002), Boxes (2007), Thelma, Louise and Chantal (2010), Twice Born (2012) and The French Minister (2013), her last; as she grew older she began to bear a close resemblance to Glenda Jackson. Divorced from her one husband, composer John Barry, she died from cancer. The actress Charlotte Gainsbourg is her daughter.
