Dark-haired, dark-eyed, slim-faced, soulful-looking American actress of Sicilian parentage who, after appearing as a teenager, made a notable adult debut in John Cassavetes' Shadows (1958), but maintained a lower profile thereafter, including several years in British films and TV. Born Lelia Rizzuto, her films included We Were Strangers (1949), House of Strangers (1949), Hysteria (1965), Theatre of Death (1967), The Italian Job (1969), A Kiss is Just a Kiss (1971), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), The Day of the Locust (1975), Baby Blue Marine (1976), Bloodbrothers (1978), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Unseen (1980), Gangster Wars (1981), Rainy Day Friends (1985), Somebody to Love (1994), Chain Link (2008), Irene in Time (2009) and The Devil Inside (2012), rounding off her movie career with the shorts Bardo (2016) and Norman Pinski Come Home (2017). Three times married: her second and third husbands both pre-deceased her.
