Brown-haired English actor of homely handsomeness, who professed a liking for comedy that was rarely exploited. 'They seem to prefer to cast me as troubled heroes'. Born Michael James, and a talented footballer in his youth, he was seen mostly on stage (from the mid 1950s) and TV (from the early 1960s), but also a few films later on: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Follow Me/The Public Eye (1972), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972), The Homecoming (1973), Bequest to the Nation (1973), Tales That Witness Madness (1973), Craze (1974), The Internecine Project (1974), Dominique (1979), Zulu Dawn (1979), the narrator in From a Far Country (1981), Highlander: The Final Dimension (1994) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997), plus the short films The Man Who Choked (2014) and From This Day Forward (2019), his last. Three times married, first to actress Lynn Farleigh and latterly to Elizabeth for 46 years until his death, he had five children.
