Tony Scott

Director

Born - 21 June 1944, North Shields, Northumberland, UK
Died - 19 August 2012

British director of action-packed, intricately-plotted mainstream movies, several of them major commercial successes. The brother of fellow-director Ridley Scott, he shocked the film world when he leapt to his death from a bridge, leaving behind a suicide note. At the time, he was said to be trying to set up a follow-up to one of his earliest successes, Top Gun. Scott was already making films in his twenties: there was a chiller short, One of the Missing (1969) and a short feature, Loving Memory (1971). But his major debut came some years later, with The Hunger (1983). A stream of colourful action films followed: Top Gun (1986), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Spy Game (2001), Man on Fire (2004), Deja Vu (2006), The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) and Unstoppable (2010), his last. It starred Denzel Washington, who appeared in five of Scott"s frenetically-edited thrillers.
