Sleek Hollywood mogul with longish dark hair, who started as an actor, but later became production chief at Paramount Pictures. Born Robert Shapera, he made his acting debut in Lydia Bailey (1952), following that with The Egyptian (1954), Man of a Thousand Faces (1957), The Sun Also Rises (2957), The Fiend Who Walked the West (1958) and The Best of Everything (1959). Later his films as producer or production executive included Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Godfather (1972), Chinatown (1974), Marathon Man (1976), Black Sunday (1977), Urban Cowboy (1980), The Cotton Club (1984), The Two Jakes (1990), The Saint (1997) and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003). Later acting cameos included those in Superfights (1995), Cannes Man (1997), An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn (1997) and The Girl from Nagasaki (2013), his last. He married seven times, the first five all to actresses: Sharon Hugueny, Camilla Sparv, Ali MacGraw, Phyllis George and Catherine Oxenberg. A film version of his autobiography, The Kid Stays in the Picture was made in 2001.
