Sheila Burrell

Actress

Born - 22 May 1922, Blackheath, London, UK
Died - 19 July 2011

Wide-eyed, dark-haired, low-voiced English stage actress, who looked born to play horror heroines and indeed made her name in a black magic stage fantasy called Dark of the Moon in 1949. Much later, she played Aunt Ada Doom in the 1995 film adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm. A cousin of Laurence Olivier, she began her film career in a minor chiller, The Man in Black (1949). Subsequent screen appearances included a nasty piece of work in The Rossiter Case (1950), followed by another bad girl in Cloudburst (1951), then Black Orchid (1952), Colonel March Investigates (1953), Women Without Men/Blonde Bait (1956), the children's serial The Dawn Killer (1959), Paranoiac (1962), Hell is Empty (1967), The Desperados (1969), then much stage and theatre work until American Roulette (1988), Afraid of the Dark (1991), Jane Eyre (1996) and The Woodlanders (1997), her last, though she continued acting on TV until 2005. The first of her two husbands was actor-novelist Laurence Payne.
