Margot Stevenson

Actress

Born - 8 February 1912, New York City, USA
Died - 2 January 2011

Though primarily a stage actress, this flashing-eyed brunette with 'socialite' good looks also appeared as the leading lady in a handful of 'B' movies in the late 1930s and early 1940s. On Broadway from the beginning of the 1930s, she briefly went to Hollywood late in the decade (having made her film debut in 1933 in a satirical short, Come to Dinner), and made: Smashing the Money Ring (1939), Invisible Stripes (1939), Castle on the Hudson (1940) , Granny Get Your Gun (1940) and Calling Philo Vance (1940). The premature death in 1941 of James Stephenson, who played Philo, ended her chances of appearing in a detective series based on the character and, after Flight Angels (1941), she returned to the stage. Very occasional film appearances as an older woman included Valley of the Dolls (1967), The Brotherhood (1968), Rabbit Run (1970), and Going in Style (1979), her last. She was married (2nd) to actor Val Avery for 56 years until his death in 2009.
