Francesco Rosi

Director

Born - 15 November 1922, Naples, Italy
Died - 10 January 2015

Balding Italian director with large round face, known as 'Italy's social conscience'. His films are principally outcries against the exploitation of the poor, in one form or another, sometimes told in the guise of a gangster story. After years as a screenwriter and/or assistant director (first co-directed film: Camicie Rosse in 1952), he broke into the forefront of European filmmakers with Salvatore Giuliano in 1961. Later credits include Hands Over the City (1963), The Moment of Truth (1965), Cinderella Italian Style/More Than a Miracle (1967), Many Wars Ago (1970), The Mattei Affair (1972), Lucky Luciano (1973), Illustrious Corpses (1976), Christ Stopped at Eboli (1979), Three Brothers (1981), Carmen (1983), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1987), To Forget Palermo (1990) and The Truce (1997), his last. He died from acute bronchitis.
