Joan Leslie

Actress

Born - 26 January 1923, Detroit, Michigan, USA
Died - 12 October 2015

Auburn-haired, full-lipped, refreshingly calm-looking American actress: born Joan Brodel, she was a child player who became a fully-fledged adult star, co-starring with James Cagney when only 19. As a girl, she was in Camille (1936), Men With Wings (1938), Two Thoroughbreds (1939), Laddie (1940) and Military Academy (1940). At this point Warners changed her name to avoid confusion with their other star Joan Blondell: Foreign Correspondent (1940), High Sierra (1941), Sergeant York (1941), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), The Male Animal (1942), The Hard Way (1943), The Sky's the Limit (1943), Hollywood Canteen (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), Cinderella Jones (1946) and Royal Flush ((1946). Leaving Warners, she remained in leading roles, albeit in lesser films: Repeat Performance (1947), Northwest Stampede (1948), Born to Be Bad (1950), The Outcast (1951), Hellgate (1952), Woman They Almost Lynched (1953), Jubilee Trail (1954) and The Revolt of Mamie Stover (1956), her last, although she continued to appear from time to time on TV, culminating in the TV movie Fire in the Dark in 1991. In between acting assignments, she ran a dress design business. Her husband of 50 years died in 2000.
