Very tall, whippily built, deep-voiced, oval-faced, shaven-headed, moustachioed Afro-American actor, an Academy Award winner for his barking sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman in 1981. Seen in many other strong character roles in scores of films, his credits, initially billed as Lou Gossett, include The New Girl (1960), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), The Bushbaby (1969), The Landlord (1970), Skin Game (1971), Travels With My Aunt (1972), An Investigation of Murder (1973), The White Dawn (1974), The Deep (1977), The Choirboys (1977), Lawman Without a Gun (1979), Jaws 3D (1983), Enemy Mine (1985), Iron Eagle (1985), Firewalker (1986), Iron Eagle II (1988), The Punisher (1989), Aces: Iron Eagle (1991), Blue Chips (1993), Iron Eagle IV (1995), Legend of the Mummy (1997), The Highway Man (1999), Deceived (2002), Daddy's Little Girls (2007), The Perfect Game (2009), The Undershepherd (2012), Boiling Pot (2015), Undercover Grandpa (2017), Foster Boy (2019), Three Months (2022), The Color Purple (2023) and a voice in IF (2024), his last work for the big screen. Three times married and divorced, he died from chronic obstructive lung disease.
