Tall, lanky, brown-haired English comedy character actor, in a string of lowbrow film comedies after becoming the youngest character (Private Pike) in the long-running TV comedy series Dad's Army, a role that was to define his career. Movies include Dad's Army (1971), Three for All (1975), Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975), Carry On Behind (1975), Not Now, Comrade (1976), Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1976), Adventures of a Private Eye (1977), Behind Enemy Lines (1985), Future via Hope (1999), 31 North 62 East (2009), The Hooligan Factory (2014), Dad's Army (remake) (2016) and a voice in The Adventures of Sleepy the Magical Bear (2023), his last work.
