Sandy-haired, boyishly handsome supporting (and occasionally lead) actor, often, in his earlier days, in outlandish slices of science-fiction. Following wartime service with the US navy, he opted for an acting career, and was soon taken into films: Crossfire (1947), The Arizona Ranger (1948), Station West (1948), Scene of the Crime (1949), The Man on the Eiffel Tower (1949), The Vanishing Westerner (1950), the voice of Prince Charming in Disney's Cinderella (1950), No Questions Asked (1951), Five (1951), Rose of Cimarron (1952), War of the Worlds (1952), Fort Osage (1952), Invaders from Mars (1953), The Twonky (1953), Cat-Women of the Moon (1953), Executive Suite (1954), Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), The Snow Creature (1954), The Indian Fighter (1955), The Far Horizons (1955), Lust for Life (1956), The Boss (1956), The Brothers Rico (1957), Kiss Them for Me (1957), Man on the Run (1958), The FBI Story (1959), Black Gold (1962), Showdown (1963), Harlow (1965), Not with My Wife, You Don't! (1966), Gunfight in Abilene (1967) and The Intruders (1970). After many episodes of TV series, now billed as William Edward Phipps, he made Messenger of Death (1988), Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) and Sordid Lives (2000), his last. He died from lung cancer complications.
