Joyce Howard

Actress

Born - 8 February 1922, London, England
Died - 23 November 2010

Attractively elegant blonde actress of porcelain complexion whose film career was entirely confined to the 1940s, but contained some interesting films. She originally studied dancing, but winning a national elocution competition resolved her to try for the stage. She was spotted in her first West End play and brought to the screen as the female juvenile lead in Freedom Radio (1941). Subsequent films, all in starring roles, included Love on the Dole (1941), The Common Touch (1941), The Night Has Eyes (1942, opposite James Mason), The Gentle Sex (1943), They Met in the Dark (1943, with Mason again), Woman to Woman (1946), They Knew Mr Knight (1946), Appointment with Crime (1946) and Mrs Fitzherbert (1947). A cameo in Shadow of the Past (1950) marked her last film appearance, although she continued to act on British TV until the early 1960s. In 1962, she moved to Hollywood, where she worked for Paramount as an executive story editor. She also wrote plays, teleplays and two novels. The first of her two husbands was actor Basil Sydney.
