Big, booming, balding, toothy, small-eyed character actor whose raspingly resonant tones reached their widest audience as butcher Fred Elliott in nigh on 1,000 episodes of the long-running soap Coronation Street. Before then, however, he'd chalked up a busy TV and film CV: Eight O'Clock Walk (1954), Summer Holiday (1962), Robbery (1967), Inadmissible Evidence (1968), Otley (1969), Waterloo (1970), Say Hello to Yesterday (1971), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Hitler: The Last 10 Days (1973), Butley (1974), Galileo (1975), Trial by Combat (1976), Seal Island (1976), Gandhi (1981), The Wicked Lady (1983), Little Dorrit (1987), Mountains of the Moon (1990), Hudson Hawk (1991), The Remains of the Day (1993), Tom & Viv (1994), Othello (1995) and Loch Ness (1996), his last, although he continued appearing on TV and in the theatre until 2012. Survived by Rona, his wife of more than 60 years, and two children.
