Allan Arbus

Actor/photographer

Born - 15 February 1918, New York City, USA
Died - 19 April 2013

Wiry (later wizened) character actor with dark curly hair, who began life as a photographer. His first wife, fellow-photographer Diane Arbus, was the subject of the 2006 film Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. They divorced in 1969 and she committed suicide in 1971, Arbus subsequently marrying actress Mariclare Costello, who survives him. He began an acting career, tentatively at first, mostly in oddball indie movies: Hey, Let's Twist! (1961), The Satan Bug (1965), Putney Swope (1969), The Christian Licorice Store (1971), Cisco Pike (1972) and Cinderella Liberty (1973). But his best-remembered role came on TV, as psychiatrist Major Freedman in M*A*S*H, which ran from 1973 to 1983. Other film appearances include those in W C Fields and Me (1976), Damien: Omen II (1978), The Electric Horseman (1979), The Last Married Couple in America (1980), Volunteers (1985), Crossroads (1986), Too Much Sun (1990), Josh and S.A.M. (1993), In Dark Places (1997) and Making Contact (1999), his last.
