Actor

Born - 10 April 1932, Alexandria, Egypt
Died - 10 July 2015

Egyptian-born international star with a shock of black hair, flashing dark eyes, thick moustache and faintly bogus smile. Born Michel Shalhoub and the number one male pin-up of Egyptian cinema from 1954 to 1961, during which he married Faten Hamama, his frequent co-star, he burst to worldwide stardom in Lawrence of Arabia, but was almost always cast thereafter, in the peak years of his appeal, in blockbuster films of one kind or another. After 1970, he accepted lesser assignments and concentrated more on his other passion - bridge. Following a debut in The Blazing Sun (1954), he was in many more in the Arabic language, including Goha (1957), before international acclaim with Lawrence (1962). For a few years, he flourished: The Fall of the Roman Empire (1963), The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964), Genghis Khan (1965), Doctor Zhivago (1965), The Night of the Generals (1966), Cinderella Italian Style (1967), Mayerling (1968), Funny Girl (1968), Mackenna's Gold (1968), Che! (1969), The Horsemen (1970) and The Last Valley (1970). Later credits included The Tamarind Seed (1974), Funny Lady (1975), Bloodline (1979), Top Secret! (1984), Keys to Freedom (1988), The Rainbow Thief (1990), The 13th Warrior (1999), The Parole Officer (2002), a French Oscar for Ibrahim (2003), Hidalgo (2004), One Night with the King (2006), The Traveller (2009) and Rock the Casbah (2013), his last. He and Hamama divorced after 19 years, but he never remarried. He died from a heart attack after suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
