Peter Vaughan

Actor

Born - 4 April 1923, Wem, Shropshire, England
Died - 6 December 2016

Perhaps the last of the great post-war British character actors, a large-headed, heavily-jawed man of massive menace potential, with thin lips and small but piercing blue eyes topped by close-cropped brown hair. Despite his many film appearances, two of his most-remembered roles were for TV - as prison boss Harry Grout in Porridge and, latterly, the blind Maester Aemon in the Game of Thrones series. A latecomer to films, he soon hit his stride: Sapphire (1959), The 39 Steps (1959), Village of the Damned (1960), The Punch and Judy Man (1962), The Devil's Agent (1962), a leading role in the B movie Smokescreen (1964), Fanatic (1965), The Naked Runner (1967), Hammerhead (1968), Alfred the Great (1969), Straw Dogs (1971), The Mackintosh Man (1973), 11 Harrowhouse (1974), Valentino (1977), Zulu Dawn (1979), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Brazil (1985), Haunted Honeymoon (1986), Mountains of the Moon (1989), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Crucible (1996), An Ideal Husband (1999), The Mother (2003), The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004), Death at a Funeral (2007), Is Anybody There? (2009), Albatross (2011), his last, and many more. His first wife was actress Billie Whitelaw. His second, actress Lillias Walker, survives him.
