Bill Maynard

Comedian/actor

Born - 8 October 1928, Farnham, Surrey, England
Died - 30 March 2018

Comfortably-built, lugubrious English comedian, actor and one-time singer, born Walter Williams, with a lick of brown hair. A popular comedian (especially in tandem with Terry Scott in the TV series Great Scott, It's Maynard), he later enjoyed character roles as balding and bearded rural rogues (notably in TV's Heartbeat) and even tried Shakespeare. On TV from the mid 1950s in his own solo series, his film appearances, mostly character cameos, included Till Death Us Do Part (1968), Carry On Loving (1970), Carry On Henry (1971), Bless This House (1972), Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1973), Carry On Dick (1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975), Robin and Marian (1976), It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet (1976), Sky Pirates (1977), a voice in The Plague Dogs (1982), Oddball Hall (1990), Dealer Boots (2013) and Speed Love (2016), his last. The second of his two wives was actress-singer Tonia Bern. He died after breaking a hip in a fall.
