Lean, whippy, dark-haired American actor, best remembered now, thanks to its frequent showings on TV, as the central character in the cult crime movie The Cat Burglar (1961): it was to be his last film. After four years in the US Navy, he enrolled in acting studies, and soon found work on TV. Born Richard Benson Jr, his scattered film appearances included those in The Man from Del Rio (1956), The Bonnie Parker Story (1968), Paratroop Command (1959) and The Legend of Tom Dooley (1959), although he continued to be furiously busy in drama series for the small screen, including more than 100 episodes of Combat! as the fiery, girl-hungry Private Kirby. In the 1980s, he spent a decade in Hawaii combining acting with starting a building business. He married beauty queen/actress Joyce Nizzari, but they divorced after 13 years. He died from natural causes.
