Craggy, pipe-smoking British director with fair, wavy hair, working in films from his early twenties after wartime service with the RAF. Born Yvon John Guillermin in Croydon (of French parentage), he made his first feature, Torment/Paper Gallows when only 22, but it was poor and he visited America to study film-making methods, returning to work his way through more second-features, to his first 'A', The Crowded Day, in 1954. After the success of Town on Trial! (1956), he moved into the higher echelons of British and international cinema: The Whole Truth (1957), I Was Monty's Double (1958), Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959), Never Let Go (1960), Waltz of the Toreadors (1962). Guns at Batasi (1964), The Blue Max (1966), New Face in Hell (1967), The Bridges at Remagen (1969), Skyjacked (1972), The Towering Inferno (1974), King Kong (1976), Death on the Nile (1978), Sheena, Queen of the Jungle (1984), King Kong Lives (1986) and the TV movie The Tracker (1988), his last. His first wife was the actress Maureen Connell.
