Stocky, dark-haired Brooklyn-born character actor, a shoo-in for cabbies, sharpies and assorted Damon Runyon types. The son of a comedian, Melton, born Sidney Meltzer, also became a stand-up comic, but was contributing film cameos from the early 1940s, playing characters with such names as Fingers, Mouse and Smiles: New York Town (1941), Dr Broadway (1942), Is Everybody Happy? (1943), Johnny Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1944), George White's Scandals (1945), Suspense (1946), The Gangster (1947), Close-Up (1948), Knock on Any Door (1949), On the Town (1949), Holiday Rhythm (1950), The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), The Naked Street (1955), Bigger Than Life (1956), Beau James (1957), The Joker is Wild (1957), The Geisha Boy (1958), Alias Jesse James (1959) and The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond (1960). Then much TV, until It Takes All Kinds (1969), Lady Sings the Blues (1972), Hit! (1973), That Lady from Peking (1975) and Game Show Models (1977), then more small-screen work, including Salvadore in The Golden Girls. His only other movie was ..and See You in the Morning, released in 1999. He died from penumonia.
