Alan Arkin

Actor

Born - 24 March 1934, New York City, USA
Died - 29 June 2023

Black-haired (later bald), Greek-looking American actor, originally of Russian heritage, and equally at home with comic or serious characters. Briefly popular in the late 1960s after beginnings as a singer, he proved an insubstantial performer at the box-office, and was later more profitably seen in eye-catching co-starring roles. Four times nominated for an Academy Award, he deservedly won in 2007 for his irrepressible grandpa in Little Miss Sunshine. Films included Calypso Heat Wave (1957), the shorts That's Me (1962) and The Last Mohican (1963), and the features The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), Wait Until Dark (1967), The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), Popi (1969), Catch 22 (1970), Little Murders (1971), Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1972), Freebie and the Bean (1974), Hollywood Cowboy (1975), The Seven Per Cent Solution (1976), Fire Sale (1977), The In-Laws (1978), The Magician of Lublin (1978), Simon (1980), The Rturn of Captain Invincible (1982), Bad Medicine (1985), Big Trouble (1986), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), North (1994), Mother Night (1996), Grosse Point Blank (1997), Jakob the Liar (1999), America's Sweethearts (2001), Firewall (2006), Marley & Me (2008), The Muppets (2011), Argo (2012), Million Dollar Arm (2014), Going in Style (2017) and Spenser Confidential (2020), his last. Actress Barbara Dana (married 35 years) was the second of his three wives.
