Gordon Willis

Cinmatographer

Born - 28 May 1931, Queens, New York City, USA
Died - 18 May 2014

Top American cinematographer, a burly man with a mop of dark (later greying) curly hair. Known as The Prince of Darkness because of his contrasting work on the gloomy interiors and dazzling exteriors of the 'Godfather' films, he learned his craft in the Korean War when he joined a film unit. Working his way through the ranks, he had his first solo film credit on End of the Road (1970), and then proceeded to put together a formidable body of work: Klute (1971), The Godfather (1972), Bad Company (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), All the President's Men (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979), Zelig (1983), The Money Pit (1986), The Godfather, Part III (1990), Malice (1993), The Devil's Own (1997), his last, and many others. He died from cancer.
