Swan-necked American character actress with frizzy dark hair, who struggled to gain a foothold in films before making her name on Broadway in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof. Born Joanna Ratner, and often seen as doctors, nurses or attorneys, her film appearances include those in The Ten Commandments (1956), Weddings and Babies (1958), The Power and the Glory (1961), Hester Street (1976), All That Jazz (1979), Fame (1980), Soup for One (1981), Love Child (1982), Baby It's You (1983), The Killing Fields (1984), Prince of Darkness (1987), Mystic Pizza (1988), Class Action (1991), Mr Wonderful (1993), Two Bits (1995), City of Angels (1998), The Jimmy Show (2001), Just Another Story (2003), The Invasion (2006), The Wackness (2008), Sarah's Key (2010) and Active Adults (2017), her last. Her (second) husband died in 2006 after 42 years of marriage.
