Very tall (6ft 6"), sandy-haired American actor, who came to prominence as upright types in the 1970s but didn't achieve the front rank. The only white member of his varsity basketball team, he gained a foothold in TV drama from the late 1960s; films followed shortly afterwards: Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970), Such Good Friends (1971), The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie (1972) and 1776 (1972). A mass of TV movies followed before he returned to films more than decade on to play the occasional character role: Second Thoughts (1983), Drug Free Kids: A Parent's Guide (1986), Oscar (1991), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Net (1995), At First Sight (1999), In Her Shoes (2005), Michael Clayton (2007), Rambo (2008), an Emmy winner for the TV movie Grey Gardens (2009), J Edgar (2011), Just an American (2012), The Judge (2014) and Joy (2015), his last. After half a lifetime's work for the Screen Actors' Guild, he became president in 2009. Actress Louise Sorel was the first of his three wives, the last of whom, ex-stuntwoman Linda Fetters, survives him.
