Sophisticated, narrow-faced, very British brunette actress of bright personality who played her first leading role at 18 and became a busy part of British cinema in post-war years. She made her debut, alongside such other stars-to-be as Dermot Walsh, Susan Shaw and Anthony Steel in the quota-quickie thriller To the Public Danger (1947). Moving swiftly into star roles, she made Badger's Green (1948), Poet's Pub (1949), Passport to Pimlico (1949), The Dark Man (1950), Mystery Junction (1951), Another Man's Poison (1951), Hot Ice (1952), Street Corner (1953), The Teckman Mystery (1954), Campbell's Kingdom (1957), A Cry from the Streets (1958), Operation Bullshine (1959), The Punch and Judy Man (1962), Doctor in Distress (1963), A Dandy in Aspic (1968), Up Pompeii (1971), Tales from the Crypt (1972), The Power (1984) and The Harpist (1999), her last. After playing Miss Marple on stage, she retired to Spain. The actress, who had three children from her 1952-64 marriage to actor John Justin, died from a heart attack following surgery after a fall.
