John Hughes

Director/writer

Born - 18 February 1950, Lansing, Michigan, USA
Died - 6 August 2009

Fair-haired, bespectacled, iconic American director, famous for his highly commercial series of pictures depicting teen rebellion, mostly in light-hearted mood, that made stars of several cast members, notably Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick. He directed only nine films - including Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), Weird Science (1985), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and Uncle Buck (1989), but wrote (latterly as Edmond Dantes) dozens more, including Pretty in Pink (1986), National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), the blockbuster hit Home Alone (1990) and its sequels, 101 Dalmatians (1996), Maid in Manhattan (2004) and Drillbit Taylor (2008), his last. His short but busy life was ended by a heart attack at 59.
