Thin-faced, blonde American character star, mostly in anguished roles, but no slouch in screwball comedy. Tremendously busy in television from the late 1940s, she was hardly seen in cinema at all until an Academy Award for The Last Picture Show (1971) brought her wider recognition. Television called her back for featured (and sometimes starring) roles in many TV movies of the 1970s and 1980s, and as star of the series Phyllis. First glimpsed in films as a nightclub diner in Carnegie Hall (1947), she subsequently appeared in Kiss Me Deadly (1955), The Rack (1956), The Chapman Report (1961), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), WUSA (1970), Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), Dillinger (1973), Charley and the Angel (1973), Daisy Miller (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Crazy Mama (1975), High Anxiety (1977), The Muppet Movie (1978), Herbie Goes Bananas (1980), History of the World Part I (1981), Shadow Play (1986), Walk Like a Man (1987), Love Hurts (1989), Texasville (1990), The Beverly Hillbillies (1993), Now and Then (1995), Never Too Late (1996), Music of the Heart (1999), The Animal (2001), Bad Santa (2003), Spanglish (2004), The Longest Yard (2005), Scary Movie 4 (2006), The Women (2008), Expecting Mary (2010), Gambit (2012), a voice in The Croods (2013), The Wedding Ringer (2015), The Gliksmans (2017), When We Last Spoke (2019), Jump, Darling (2020), High Holiday (2021), her last, and many more. She married director George Englund; they had five children, but divorced after 25 years. Englund died in 2017.
