He broke into films in the late 1960s playing greasy and often obnoxious types throughout the first decade of his movie career, He looked a different kind of character actor, though, when reappearing, trimmed and toupeed, in the the early 1980s, and began playing high-pressure types prone to anxiety attacks. After a debut in Greetings (1968), he was a distinctive part of many more films: Putney Swope (1969), The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), Bananas (1971), The Organization (1971), The Candidate (1972), Slither (1973), The Conversation (1974), Nashville (1975), Gable and Lombard (1976), The Stunt Man (1977), The Brink's Job (1978), One Trick Pony (1980), Continental Divide (1981), Get Crazy (1983), The Cotton Club (1984), Desert Bloom (1985), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Let It Ride (1989), Dick Tracy (1990), Glass Shadow (1993), Diabolique (1996), Obsession (1997), The Ninth Gate (1999), The Majestic (2001) and White Boy (2002), his last before a series of strokes forced him to retire.
