Black-haired, craggy-faced. disgruntled-looking American leading man who played a lot of small roles before breaking into the big time via a Fox contract. These years at the studio (1958-1965) were his only ones as a top star, and contain his best performances, although he then found his most remembered role, as Marshal Jim Crown in TV's Cimarron Strip, a popular 90-minute western series still shown on some TV channels today. His 150-plus films began with When Worlds Collide (1951) and included One Minute to Zero (1952), The Winning Way (1953), Silver Lode (1954), Diane (1955), 7 Men from Now (1956), Johnny Trouble (1957), Ten North Frederick (1958), These Thousand Hills (1959), The Story of Ruth (1960), Murder Inc (1960), The Fiercest Heart (1961), The Comancheros (1961), Convicts Four/Reprieve! (1962), Shock Treatment (1964), Rio Conchos (1964), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), Sands of the Kalahari (1965), See You in Hell, Darling (1966), The Invincible Six (1968), Captain Apache (1971), Run, Cougar, Run (1972), Welcome to Arrow Beach (1974), Crazy Mama (1975), Eaten Alive (1976), Cuba Crossing (1980), Butterfly (1982), Treasure of the Amazon (1985), Moving Target (1988), Omega Cop (1990), Lightning in a Bottle (1993), Land of Milk & Honey (1996) and Second Chances (1998), his last. He was nominated for an Oscar in The Mark (1961). Married three times, he had five children. Skin cancer killed him at 94.
