Faten Hamama

Actress

Born - 27 May 1931, Al Mansurah, Egypt
Died - 17 January 2015

For many years the first lady of Egyptian and Arabic screens, Hamama was a former child and teenage actress who grew into a beautiful, full-lipped brunette star who made many films opposite Omar Sharif, to whom she was married for 19 years. She made her first film, A Happy Day, at the age of nine, but her best work came in the mid to late 1950s, often in films with Sharif before he found international stardom: Will You Forever? (1954), Dark Waters (1956), The Heart Has Its Reasons (1957), No Tomorrow (1958), Among the Ruins (1959) and The River of Love (1960). After two English-language films, The Fur Collar (1962) and Cairo (1963), she returned to Egypt, where she continued making films regularly until the late 1970s. Her last appearance came in Land of Dreams in 1993.
