Carl Reiner

Director/actor/writer/producer

Born - 20 March 1922, New York City, USA
Died - 29 June 2020

Tall, balding, bespectacled giant of US comedy who played comic cameos in dozens of films, directed Steve Martin in four of his funniest movies and pioneered the award-winning Dick Van Dyke Show for TV. Married to his wife Estelle for almost 65 years before her death in 2008 (she was famous for her 'orgy' comment in When Harry Met Sally (1989), directed by Reiner's son Rob), he began writing sketches for TV comedy shows in 1950. After dramatic training, he had made a Broadway debut the previous year, and was soon busy providing comic characters and featured roles in films: Topaze (1957), Happy Anniversary (1959), The Gazebo (1959), Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961), The Thrill of It All (1963), It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963), The Art of Love (1965), The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), A Guide for the Married Man (1967), The Comic (1969), Ten from Your Show of Shows (1973), Oh, God! (1977), The End (1978), History of the World Part I (1981), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), Summer School (1987), Fatal Instinct (1993), Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve (2004), Ocean's Thirteen (2007), Dumbbells (2014) and a voice in Toy Story 4 (2019, as Carl Reinoceros). As director, his movies included Enter Laughing (1967, how appropriate), The Comic, Oh, God!, The Jerk (1979), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Man with Two Brains (1983), All of Me (1984), Bert Rigby, You're a Fool (1989), Sibling Rivalry (1990) and That Old Feeling (1997), his last. He died, aged 98, from natural causes at his Hollywood home.
