Brunette (blonde from 1956) American actress with alabaster features and slightly unsympathetic personality that made her most effective as women from the shadier side of life. Working her way up from bit parts, she began to attract leading roles, albeit mainly in 'B' features, from the early 1950s, while still playing the 'other woman' in classier features. After a showy but largely unproductive period with Universal-International, she won an Oscar nomination for Some Came Running in 1958 and showed great tenacity in her career, remaining in leading roles until her mid forties. She also wrote the screenplay for Rooster Cogburn in 1975, using the pen name Martin Julien. After a debut in The Locket (1946), she appeared in Thunder Mountain (1947), The Velvet Touch (1948), Roughshod (1949), Geisha Girl (1951), Wild Stallion (1952), The Scarlet Spear (1953), Sabrina (1954), Wyoming Renegades (1955), Red Sundown (1956), Mister Cory (1957), Paris Holiday (1958), The Best of Everything (1959), Ice Palace (1960), The Man from the Diners' Club (1963), First Men in the Moon (1964), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), Night of the Grizzly (1966), The Happening (1967), Crossplot (1969) and Day of the Wolves (1970). Producer Hal Wallis was the second of her two husbands. They were married for 20 years until his death in 1986.
