Tall, lanky, open-mouthed, very dark American actor, born Courtland Jourolmon (but 'Jerry' to his friends), who made his film debut at 17 and was Shirley Temple's love interest in his second. After war service, he went to Columbia, appearing as lead or co-star in the number of co-feature musicals and outdoors action films. Following a series of poor films in the mid 1960s, he moved behind the camera as a producer and director, working for the Disney studio through the 1970s. His films as actor included Together Again (1944), Kiss and Tell (1945), The Man from Colorado (1948), Battleground (1949), When You're Smiling (1950), The Texas Rangers (1951), Sunny Side of the Street (1951), The Barefoot Mailman (1951), Cripple Creek (1952), Take the High Ground! (1953), The Bamboo Prison (1954), Tonka (1958), Hell Below Deck (1961), Tharus, Son of Attila (1962) and Black Spurs (1965), his last. He produced and/or directed numerous episodes of TV drama and comedy series, and directed two Disney theatrical features, Run, Cougar, Run (1972) and (in Britain) Diamonds on Wheels (1974). His last directorial work was on the TV series Knots Landing in the early to mid 1990s. The first of his three wives was actress Polly Bergen, and he died from heart disease.
