Full-faced, chubby-cheeked, narrow-mouthed, diminutive English character actress, on TV from 1968, the medium where she had her biggest success, notably as Nellie Boswell in more than 70 episodes of the popular series Bread. Films include Where Adam Stood (1976), Rapunzel Let Down Your Hair (1978), Arthur's Hallowed Ground (1984), Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), The Girl in a Swing (1988), Heaven's a Drag (1994), The Asylum (2000), Mothers and Daughters (2004), The Understudy (2008), Kin (2009), and the short films Bad Night for the Blues (2010) and Brexicuted (2018), her last. Born Jean Dance, and married (second) for more than 50 years to composer/conductor Carl Davis, who died a month before her, she died from vascular dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.
