A mournful-looking character actor with distinctive moustache, Jacobi (born Louis Jacobovitch) was a boy actor, violinist and stand-up comic in his earlier days before starting a film career in England, then, back in America, finding his signature role of Van Daan in a 1955 Broadway production of The Diary of Anne Frank and repeating it in the 1959 film. Other movie roles included Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary? (1953), A Kid for Two Farthings (1955), Charley Moon (1956), Song Without End (1960), Irma La Douce (1963), Penelope (1966), Little Murders (1971), Next Stop Greenwich Village (1976), The Magician of Lublin (1979), Arthur (1981), My Favorite Year (1982), Avalon (1990) and IQ (1994), his last.
