Bigas Luna

Director

Born - 19 March 1946, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Died - 5 April 2013

The second controversial Spanish director to die within a few days, Luna's film were mainly centred on sex. Sometimes spectacular in their vulgarity, the films were also stunningly well-photographed, contained driving doses of lifeforce and occasionally won Festival awards. One of them, Jamon, Jamon (1992), made stars of Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, much later to become husband and wife. Luna's first film, Tatuaje (1976) was poor - although already controversial - and it was not until 1985 that he established his reputation with Lola. After that, he filmed fairly steadily: Anguish (1987), The Ages of Lulu (1990), Golden Balls (1993), The Tit and the Moon (1994), Bambola (1996), The Chambermaid of the Titanic (1997), The Naked Maja/Volaverunt (1999), Sound of the Sea (2001), My Name is Juani (2006) and Di Di Hollywood (2010), his last.
