Tall, diffident, fresh-faced English leading man with tousled dark hair. Acting as Russell Enoch (born William Russell Enoch) until 1955, he became famous in TV's The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, and later proved a formidable Shakespearian. Films include Gift Horse (1952), Intimate Relations (1952), Appointment in London (1953), Malta Story (1953), Always a Bride (1953), They Who Dare (1954), The Gay Dog (1954), One Good Turn (1955), Above Us the Waves (1955), The Man Who Never Was (1956), The Big Chance (1957), The Adventures of Hal 5 (1958), The Share Out (1962), Return to Sender (1963), The Great Escape (1963), Terror (1977), Superman (1978), Death Watch (1980), The Affair (1995), The Visit (2016) and Executive Order (2020), his last, as well as many episodes of Doctor Who, as Ian Chesterton. Twice married, he had four children.
